The heart, soul and centre of activities is the Thorvaldsen Bazaar, the old shop in Reykjavik's city centre, established in 1901 and now 114 years old. The merchandise consisted mainly of handknitted woollen garments sold on commission. However, there were several other skilled people happy to be able to earn some money for their work, such as goldsmiths, wood carvers and seamstresses. When the society celebrated its 25th anniversary the members decided that they needed a permanent location to sell these wares and so the Bazaar was founded. The Bazaar Committee is in charge of staffing the shop and scheduling the work shifts. The society has only one paid employee, the shop manager.
